Chapter 17

Shiro had always known Angel was stubborn. But in his current frame of mind, he was beginning to believe the man stupid as well.

“Angel, do you not understand? This is proof enough that Mendez has him. Wolff will be forced to take action.”

“Shiro.” Angel spoke forcefully, as if reprimanding a child. “Listen to me. If we go to Wolff with...this,” he paused, and his eyes flicked to the crumpled package, “he’ll confront Mendez. Who will deny everything. And before Wolff can do a damned thing, he’ll go to wherever he stashed Jenner and kill him.”

“He will kill him regardless!”

“Yes. Eventually, he will.” As he spoke, Angel’s features twisted in distaste. “But right now he’s still alive. I know it, and you know it. We have to do everything we can to try and keep it that way—and that means not siccing the cops, or ourselves, on Mendez.”

Shiro sank onto the couch and stared ahead, seeing nothing. “We must do something,” he said in a hollow voice. “We cannot simply sit here and wait for him to start mailing body parts.”

After a moment’s silence, Angel said, “We might not have a choice.”

“Bastard.” He could manage nothing above a flat monotone as he got to his feet and glared at the younger man. “For all your professions of concern, you are no better than Wolff. You do not care whether he lives or dies.”

Enraged, Angel opened his mouth, but clamped it shut immediately. He breathed in once, and at last managed to say, “Why should I?”

Shiro’s first impulse was to attack. He restrained himself with tremendous effort. “I admit I do not know the details of what went on between the two of you at Ulysses—”

“At least you’re right about one thing.”

“—but there are things you do not know as well,” he finished. “Angel, you are my friend. I trust you. And I need you to trust me when I say Jenner is not the monster everyone—including himself—believes him to be.”

“Oh, really.” Crossing his arms, Angel met his eyes with cold doubt. “And how is that possible? If Jenner says he’s a monster, then he goddamned well is.”

“Do you believe yourself a criminal?”

Angel’s eyes flashed fury, but he didn’t answer. He had no need to. His silence said enough.

“Of course you do not. Yet you are, at least in the eyes of others. But perhaps not in your heart.”

“All right,” Angel said at last. “Point taken. You know, you’re even more like him than I thought.”

“I am,” he admitted. “And that is why I believe his life is worth saving.”

Angel sighed and relaxed his rigid stance. “It still doesn’t change the fact that right now there isn’t much we can do. You know I’m right about what will happen if we flat-out attack Mendez.”

“Yes.” Shiro looked down at the envelope in his hands with its appalling content, absurdly thankful for the evidence that his sempai had thus far survived. “Still, we must do something soon. Mendez’s patience with keeping him captive will no doubt wear thin.
